An enhanced VEM formulation for plane elasticity

In this paper, an enhanced Virtual Element Method (VEM) formulation is proposed for plane elasticity. It based on the improvement of strain representation within element, without altering degree displacement interpolating functions element boundary. The idea to fully exploit polygonal elements with a high number sides, peculiar VEM feature, characterized by many degrees freedom boundary, even if low interpolation order assumed over each side. approach framed generalization classic formulation, obtained introducing energy norm in projection operator definition. Although such may mainly appear have formal value, it allows effectively point out mechanical meaning quantities involved definition and drive selection representations. Various enhancements are tested through several numerical examples. Numerical results successfully show capability (i) considerably increase accuracy (with respect standard VEM) while keeping optimal convergence rate, (ii) bypass need stabilization terms practical cases, (iii) obtain natural serendipity (vi) treat also nearly incompressible materials.
